About Me

Melany Brown

Hello my name is Melany Brown. First of all I am a wife, a mother and a grandmother. I have had the privilege of being taught to sew by my mother and grandmother (who was a milliner and professional seamstress).

I made my first dress at the age of 12 using an old Singer that my mom had bought me for my 12th birthday. During school terms in the hostel I became the ‘mender’ and also did alterations for so many of my friends and fellow boarders, all by hand.

I make my own clothes, and a lot of my children’s clothing in the early years of their childhood. I am still sewing little garments for children from 0-10 (after 10 they become aware and fussy). I use pure cotton fabric that I source locally here in Cape Town and from Da Gama fabrics in the Eastern Cape, mixing the colours and creating individual garments for little girls and boys. All my fabric is pre-shrunk and can be tumbled-dried after wearing. I take great care in my work and with care the garment will certainly be outgrown before it falls apart. My designs are simple and made with comfort in mind.

I love fabric and caring for fabric (my hand-me-downs always looked new). When it came to mending it was bringing a torn garment back to life. I became aware that I have a gift of invisible mending.

Melodious….sound of sewing was the name I chose for my business. I began my business a short while ago from home and although I work during office hours for my husband I use all my spare time sewing and mending.
